The diminutive Adélie and the majestic emperor penguin, both quite social birds that live in vast colonies, have adapted to their extreme environment through very different reproductive practices. While Adélies build nests from the pebbles exposed by melting ice, the emperors shun the very thought of nest building. Instead, the male holds the single egg laid by his mate on his feet, sheltered by belly flab, for months of subzero temperatures, while the female performs an epic search for food. Then they swap roles.

The terrific distances—as far as one thousand miles—that the emperor treks in search of food for its young seem slight when compared with the Adélie, which sometimes swims three thousand miles to reach its breeding grounds.
