For all of its armor, the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) might as well be dressed in tissue paper. When other turtles run into trouble, they withdraw into their shells—this species can’t fit its vulnerable head under cover. And its reputation for savory flesh has made it a favorite for soups, despite international hunting bans.

Like dolphins and whales, sea turtles live in the ocean but need air to survive. When surfacing to breathe, and when crawling ashore to breed, these oceangoing reptiles place themselves at risk—six of seven species are endangered. No one who has seen just-hatched young emerging from the sand and running a gauntlet of predators to get to the sea doubts for an instant just how perilous their existence can be. If they make it through their infancy, however, these hatchlings might live as long as eighty years.

To help ensure the survival of this and other sea turtle species, the Sierra Club sponsors monitoring and hatchling-rescue efforts each year during nesting season.

Twenty assorted full-color 5 x 7" blank notecards (5 each of 4 styles) with envelopes in a decorative box. ISBN 978-0-7649-4197-9.
