A preeminent artist of his generation, Romare Bearden (1911-1988) lived and worked during a period of extraordinary ferment in American Society and American art. He found his subjects in memories and experiences of the rural South, the urban North, and the Caribbean. They were folk and jazz musicians, streets scenes, domestic interiors, and landscapes. The diversity of Bearden’s oeuvre reflects the excitement and turmoil of his time.
Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000), whose career spanned more than six decades, is considered one of the twentieth century’s greatest artists. Mentored at an early age in Harlem by artists, writers, philosophers, and historians, he became the first American artist of African descent to receive sustained widespread success. A renowned teacher, Lawrence was a recipient of the National Medal of Arts, the NAACP’s Spingarn medal, and eighteen honorary post-doctorate degrees.
