Retaining traditional roots, the women of the nomadic Samburu in northern Kenya color themselves with bright red and accessorize with multiple layers of beadwork, as evidenced by this woman’s earrings, necklaces, and headdress. Bracelets of similar construct are often worn, too. Household roles for Samburu females include collecting water, gathering wood, milking livestock (cattle, goats, sheep, and camels), and maintaining the portable houses—pole frames covered with animal hides, grass matting, and mud. Young Samburu women, like their brothers, undergo significant rites of passage.
