 A serious artist who studied painting and design at Pratt Institute and Cooper Union, B. “Hap” Kliban (American, 1935–1990) would idly draw his four resident felines as he contemplated ideas for other work. Those drawings found their way to a literary agent, and in 1975 Cat became an instant cartoon sensation. Today Kliban’s Cats are adored icons with millions of fans worldwide.
