Claude Monet (1840-1926) devoted himself to the study of light and its effects on sky, water, and land. Working quickly to record his "impression" before atmospheric conditions changed, Monet helped create the impressionist style. The spontaneity and breezy informality of his paintings, as well as the congenial familiarity of his subjects, have made his work universally popular.
