There are profound differences of intention and approach between self-taught and academic art. In general, for self-taught artists, the impulse to make art and to communicate is transmuted into images and never into strategies. This is another way of saying that these artists have no sense of fashion in art, or of commitments to style and imagery for some merely temporary and local purpose. Whatever they invest of themselves in their work they invest all the time; their attentiveness both to the world and to their own inner lives is absolute.

We look at these images—even the most desperately private ones—and we feel, above all, that we are not alone. In the two dimensions of an image, something miraculous occurs: people are joined to people, human beings to animals, calamity to celebration, the artist to his world—and to ours.

Thirty color reproductions from the Ricco/Maresca Gallery. Oversized postcards measure 6 1/2 x 4 3/4 in. ISBN 978-0-7649-4662-2.
