Plum and Peach Bloom, 1911–1913, by Gustave Baumann (American, b. Germany, 1881–1971). Published with the Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe.

Maker of marionettes, furniture, paintings, and woodblock prints, Gustave Baumann (American, b. Germany, 1881–1971) believed in doing things with his own hands. In Chicago he worked as an engraver, during a year in Germany he studied woodblock printing, and at the age of fifty he began staging elaborate puppet shows for children. By that time he had lived in New Mexico for over a decade, making the landscape of the American Southwest, its crystalline light and rich colors, the subject of many of his prints. Baumann began with a gouache sketch or painting, used it in carving the woodblocks he would need to produce a print, and then colored and pulled his own prints, dispensing with the need for a master printer.
