St. Luke: carpet page from the Lindisfarne Gospels, English, early eighth century. Published with The British Library. The intricately ornamented eighth-century manuscript known as the Lindisfarne Gospels was created between 710 and 720 at Lindisfarne monastery, in northeastern England. Nearly 250 years after the book was made, a priest in Durham (where the monks of Lindisfarne had fled from Viking marauders) translated its Latin text into Anglo-Saxon, the lingua franca of the time. He wrote out his translation between the lines of the original text. The Gospels’ magnificent binding has vanished, but the pages survive, still glowing with color 1,300 years after their creation.
