The collections of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) represent the work of Native People throughout the Western Hemisphere, from 10,000 years ago to the present. In its exhibitions, public programs, publications, and community outreach, NMAI provides a Native perspective on its collections, which include more than 800,000 objects. Through collaborative work on inaugural NMAI exhibitions, significant contemporary pieces in traditional styles have been added to the collection.
