A highly successful artist who often depicted historical, allegorical, biblical, and imaginative scenes, Sir Joseph Noel Paton (Scottish, 1821–1901) was the son of a damask designer and teacher; he abandoned the family trade to pursue painting. While studying at the Royal Academy Schools in London, his interest in achieving convincing naturalistic detail was inspired by his friend and fellow Academy student, the Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais. He became a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1850 and was appointed the queen’s limner for Scotland in 1866. His most famous paintings––those depicting fairies––enjoyed great popularity during Queen Victoria’s reign.

In The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania, an imaginative interpretation of a scene from Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, the king and queen of the fairies, at the center of a host of smaller fairy creatures, quarrel over a human child. It was judged picture of the season in Edinburgh in 1850. The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania––a sequel to The Quarrel––finds the fairy king and queen reunited, the quarrel resolved. The painting won a prize in the 1847 competition to decorate the new Houses of Parliament.
