The long and prolific career of Imogen Cunningham (1883-1976) established her as a pioneering artist who had an indelible impact on the course of photography. Beginning as a student in the early twentieth century, she distinguished herself by taking an incredibly thoughtful, carefully considered approach to subjects that ranged from traditional portraits to industrial equipment to still-life abstractions, ensuring glorious results no matter the content.

Cunningham’s luminous botanical photographs from the late 1920s stand as some of her most beloved and best recognized works. Celebrated for their stark precision, brilliant clarity, and unmistakable sensuality, these wondrous black-and-white pictures reflect the artist’s attention to detail and reverence for photography’s alchemic properties.

The images featured in this collection--Two Callas and Magnolia Blossom-–are striking examples of Cunningham’s artistry, showcasing technical excellence and rich, palpable beauty. Both are included in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s collection.
