The Art of Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson

Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson (American, b. 1940) chronicles the lives and stories of her family, community, and African American ancestry in often large multimedia artworks variously incorporating fabric, charcoal, ink, paint, twigs, clay, buttons, found objects, and other materials.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, and a graduate of Columbus College of Art and Design, Robinson received a MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Award in 2004 for her extraordinary body of work, examples of which can be found in the collections of the Columbus Museum of Art, the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University, and other museums and galleries.

The images on these notecards are two of Robinson’s illustrations for Evelyn Coleman’s children’s book To Be a Drum, which celebrates the rhythm of the earth as a force that has unified and liberated the souls of African Americans throughout history.

“When I first read Evelyn Coleman’s manuscript, I was touched deeply,” Robinson has said. “I was transported to a past, present, and future that blended together like the sound of beating drums. I saw Africa, the Middle Passage, slavery, the civil-rights struggle, black artists, teachers, and heroes, and always, the children, looking toward tomorrow. I knew that the art must be transformative. And I knew that I had found my sister in spirit.”
