The glowing colors that enliven traditional Mexican architecture are more than merely picturesque. These glorious hues echo an indigenous heritage whose cultural significance endures from pre-Columbian times.
Jeffrey Becom is a fine art photographer and painter, trained as an architect, with a passion for color. He has devoted more than a decade to traveling the backroads of Mesoamerica, tracing the unbroken connection between painted vernacular architecture and the ancient beliefs implicit in the vivid walls.
Becom is the author of two award-winning books—Mediterranean Color and Maya Color (both from Abbeville Press)—and the subject of the PBS documentary For the Colors: A Journey Through Italy. His work appears in major public and private collections worldwide.
