Will Barnet concerns himself primarily with the human figure. His images do not ultimately portray individuals, however, but precise arrangements of forms expressive of moods and feelings. These balanced shapes create strong, interlocking compositions. Barnet is a printmaker as well as a painter, and while the Silent Seasons group is executed in oils, the paintings have a finish so fine that they almost resemble prints. In them, a poker-faced young girl leans on a table, seeming to ignore whatever is beyond the window next to her; instead, her interest lies in a wordless conversation with the large parrot that clings gymnastically to the window's frame. Subtly colored and plainly rendered, each square composition is a mystery whose source is another mystery.
