One of America’s premier assemblage artists, Betye Saar has been creating inspired pieces since the early 1960s. Her early printmaking, enameling, and costume design expanded to three-dimensional assemblages and installations, exploring subjects like mysticism, heritage, and women’s work. Saar transforms keepsakes, old photographs, dried flowers, fabric scraps, and other found materials into memory boxes invested with profound emotional power. Drawn from social and political movements, spiritual systems, and visual cultures, her imagery blends black aesthetics, feminist art, and African art with modern/postmodern movements, popular culture, and personal memories. Pomegranate also publishes Betye Saar (2003), the second volume of the David C. Driskell Series of African American Art.
