C.R. Mackintosh sought unity in his architecture and design to a degree that may have been equaled only by his contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright. Both architects took responsibility not only for the structures they built but also for the furniture, carpets, wall decorations, and light fittings that filled them. Presented in these notecards are graphic adaptations of four Mackintosh chairs; they display his synthesis of Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts, with a little prescient Modernism thrown in. They also show that for Mackintosh, as for Wright, beauty trumped comfort. But whether or not they encouraged high turnover among tea room customers, these chairs are playful, elegantly clean-lined, and redolent of their creator’s unique design sensibility.
