R. H. Ives Gammell Boxed NotecardsProduct DescriptionPainter, teacher, and author R. H. Ives Gammell (American, 1893–1981) realized at an early age that paint and canvas provided his most effective means of communication. After years of solo sketching and drawing, Gammell began studying with teachers in 1908. Always seeking refinement, he continued honing his skills, even putting painting aside for two years and apprenticing himself under William M. Paxton to study drawing and composition. Gammell then traveled throughout Europe and Africa for further study and sketching, afterward applying his sharpened technique toward his quest to translate intellectual matters—from the pages of classical and biblical literature—into paint. In 1946, the same year Gammell began taking on students and published Twilight of Painting (a treatise on art history and the process of passing on artistic knowledge), he began creating The Hound of Heaven. Based on a religious poem of the same title by English poet Francis Thompson (1859–1907), the series, also influenced by Carl Jung’s Psychology of the Unconscious, was completed in 1956. Contains five each of the following notecards:
