Cape Dorset is a small but vibrant community on the southwest coast of Baffin Island, in the Canadian Arctic territory of Nunavut. Known locally as “Kinngait” for the area’s high, rolling hills, the community is renowned for the wonderful Inuit prints produced in its cooperatively owned printmaking studios, now active for close to fifty years. Since the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative was formed in 1959, the Kinngait Studios have released an annual collection of limited edition fine art prints. Employing diverse printmaking media and techniques—including stonecut, stencil, lithography, engraving, and etching—Cape Dorset’s graphic artists explore a wide range of themes and subjects, from wildlife and hunters to shamans and scenes of everyday life. The four images adapted for this selection of notecards evoke the natural beauty of the far north.
