Artist, historian, curator, educator—David C. Driskell (American, b. 1931) has become the preeminent voice in African American art and one of the foremost contributors to the development of modern art in America. Born in Georgia to a family of sharecroppers, Driskell as an artist has focused much of his work on black culture in the rural South and its roots in Africa. As a historian and curator, he achieved acclaim for producing the groundbreaking 1976 exhibition “Two Centuries of Black American Art, 1750–1950” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art—the most comprehensive survey of African American art history up to that time. As an educator, he has inspired countless students of all ethnic backgrounds to explore their heritage through art. In 2000, President Bill Clinton awarded Driskell the National Humanities Medal for his contributions to American art and culture. Driskell is professor emeritus at the University of Maryland, College Park, which in 2001 opened the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora. This notecard assortment reproduces four of Driskell’s powerful multimedia works, courtesy of DC Moore Gallery in New York City.
