During the 1960s and 1970s Faith Ringgold spearheaded the black and feminist art movements. She has created an amazingly diverse body of work, from oils to collages, thangkas to masks, and is most famous for her quilts, which combine painting, fabric, and narrative art. The quilts shown in these notecards celebrate the rich heritage of jazz and the performers who contributed to its development.

Ringgold has received more than seventy-five awards and honors—including two NEA awards and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award—and has been presented with seventeen honorary doctorates. Her work is in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the Museum of Fine Art, Boston; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Museum of American Art, Washington, DC; and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Ringgold is also a teacher, a lecturer, and an author. Her original Tar Beach quilt is in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum, New York. The monograph Faith Ringgold, volume III in the David C. Driskell Series of African American Art, was published by Pomegranate in 2004.
