Cecilia Beaux (American, 1855–1942) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (where she later taught) and the Académie Julian in Paris. After exhibiting at the 1890 Paris Exposition, Beaux returned to the United States, where her skills in portraiture and figure painting earned her the Gold Medal from the Pennsylvania Academy of Art. Beaux also received the Dodge Prize from the National Academy of Design in New York; she became a member of the organization in 1902.
Beaux developed into a portraitist of American society. Among her patrons and subjects were Henry James, Edith Roosevelt, Georges Clemenceau, and Sir David Beatty. Her prowess at painting portraits of children is exemplified by two of the reproductions selected for this collection of notecards; the complementing cards reflect Beaux’s ability to sensitively incorporate mood into the likenesses of her subjects.
