Paintings by Malaika Favorite
Twenty-four portraits of significant African American and Diaspora poets make up The Furious Flower Portrait Quilt, created by Malaika Favorite for the 2004 Furious Flower Poetry Conference at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Malaika Favorite is not a portrait painter in the usual sense; she is a painter of ideas. Using mixed media collage, she incorporates each poet’s work into his or her portrait, striving not for a realistic rendering of her subject but rather a suggestion of that poet’s character as she perceives it. Presented here are four portraits from The Furious Flower Portrait Quilt, each accompanied by the poetry incorporated into the painting.
