Notecards

Columbus, Ohio, native Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson chronicles the stories of her family, her community, her extensive travels, and her African American ancestry in large multimedia works variously incorporating fabric, charcoal, ink, paint, twigs, clay, buttons, found objects, and other materials. Robinson’s art resembles folk art, but reflects the sophistication of a trained fine artist. But it isn’t self-conscious faux folk: there is immediate power in it, and a voice that speaks from the heart. She has developed a vocabulary for this voice: for example, her large, complex pieces, which take on presence and vitality over years of research and creation, are RagGonNons.

Robinson received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2004 for her extraordinary body of work, examples of which can be found in the collections of the Columbus Museum of Art, the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University, and other museums and galleries.
