Keith Morrison was born in Linstead, Jamaica, in 1942. His high school art teacher introduced him to a variety of artistic traditions, including the work of Constable, Turner, Seurat, and Van Gogh, and encouraged him to look beyond Jamaica to the global art community. The renowned Jamaican sculptor Edna Manley was another source of inspiration. Morrison received his BA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1963. It was in America that he developed his interest in abstraction. He held his first important exhibition in 1966, when a painting was included in the Art Institute’s biannual show. Influenced by political events and cross-cultural sources, Morrison subsequently turned from abstract to figurative art, becoming a storyteller through his works. He also received his MFA and pursued academic writing and teaching. Presently he is dean of the Tyler School of Art at Temple University.
