I’m always trying to get to a danger point in color, where color either becomes too sweet or it becomes too harsh, it becomes too noisy or too quiet, and at that point I still want the picture to be strong, forceful, and the carrier of everything that a painting has to have: contrast, drama, austerity. —Wolf Kahn
Wolf Kahn erases the line between abstract and representational art. Bold experiments in color relationships, his landscapes do not seek to record what he sees; that is far from their intent. But Kahn’s windbreaks, barns, and fields still awaken powerful sensory associations, calling forth the drone of industrious bees, the green smell of forest understory, or the sunshot dust of a summer haymow.
The recipient of Fulbright and Guggenheim awards, Kahn is a member of the National Academy of Design and of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others.
